Islam Makhachev Ufc Welterweight Fight Preparation

NEWARK, New Jersey — UFC welterweight veteran Vicente Luque believes Islam Makhachev‘s entry into the 170-pound class will be intriguing as he anticipates the Russian star’s debut in a new weight category.

Makhachev, a former lightweight champion with an impressive record of 15 consecutive wins, now faces a potential challenge due to his height and reach disadvantages against the current welterweight champion, Jack Della Maddalena.

“I’ve trained with him a few times, and I can say that he really is very good on the ground, with a lot of pressure and technique,” Luque told MMA Fighting. “He’s not weak for the division, but if he can’t close the distance, that could be a difficulty.”

Makhachev, standing 5-foot-10 with a 70.5-inch reach, aims to claim a second UFC belt. However, facing the champion and ranked contenders presents a significant challenge. “We hit harder than the guys at 155,” Luque noted, pointing out the risks of grappling against larger opponents.

Despite the potential physical hurdles, Luque expressed confidence in Makhachev’s skills. “He has a good chance at becoming champion, but he will have to work hard,” he added.

The timing of Makhachev’s welterweight debut remains uncertain as the UFC has yet to announce a date. Meanwhile, Luque is set to face another formidable opponent, Kevin Holland, at UFC 316 this weekend.

Luque has stated his eagerness to keep his momentum going after a successful fight last December, indicating, “It’s a great match-up for me style-wise. I’m prepared in all areas.”

Both fighters are notable for their striking abilities and grappling acumen, which suggests an exciting matchup ahead. UFC 316 is highly anticipated, showcasing both men’s talents and further contributing to the welterweight division’s competitive landscape.
