NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New York Islanders bolstered their defensive lineup Saturday by acquiring Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Perunovich, 26, has appeared in 24 games this season, tallying six points (two goals, four assists). The Hibbing, Minn., native has played 97 career NHL games with the Blues, recording 29 points (two goals, 27 assists) and four assists in seven postseason appearances.

The Blues originally selected Perunovich in the second round (45th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. He has also made an impact in the American Hockey League (AHL), scoring 42 points (five goals, 37 assists) in 39 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds, St. Louis’ top affiliate.

Before turning pro, Perunovich starred at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he played 115 games over three seasons, amassing 105 points (20 goals, 85 assists). His standout 2019-20 season earned him the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey player. That year, he averaged over a point per game, finishing with 40 points (six goals, 34 assists) in 34 games.

Internationally, Perunovich has represented the United States at the 2023 World Championships and the 2018 World Junior Championships.

The conditional nature of the draft pick means its final value could change based on Perunovich’s performance or other agreed-upon criteria. The Islanders hope his offensive skills and playoff experience will strengthen their blue line as they push for a postseason berth.
