Israeli Airstrike on Beirut Suburb Escalates Middle East Tensions
The Lebanese health ministry has announced that at least 31 people have lost their lives due to an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday. The attack comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. In an official statement, Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two key commanders, Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmed Wahbi, as a result of the strike.
According to Hezbollah, the airstrike targeted Dahiyeh, a stronghold of the organization within Beirut. The incident marks the first Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital in recent months and follows Hezbollah’s retaliatory launch of 140 rockets into northern Israel.
The Israeli military has asserted that Ibrahim Aqil, whom it identifies as Hezbollah’s chief of operations and the commander of the elite Radwan forces, was killed in the strike. This information was confirmed by an Israeli military spokesperson but was not elaborated in the statement released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu declared on the social media platform X, “Our goals are clear, and our actions speak for themselves,” without providing further details.
Earlier this week, Beirut was shaken by explosive incidents involving communication devices like pagers and two-way radios. Hezbollah attributes these explosions, which resulted in 37 deaths and over 3,400 injuries, to Israeli actions. However, Israel has not publicly confirmed these allegations, refraining from commenting when questioned by reporters.
The United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Türk, has called for a comprehensive investigation into these explosions, condemning the weaponization of everyday communication devices as a violation of international human rights laws. There is also an ongoing call within the UN Security Council for those responsible for these actions to be held accountable.
The strikes have intensified the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which began after Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip. The ongoing military engagement has already led to a significant number of casualties, including women and children, exacerbating an already volatile situation in the region.
