In a stunning turn of events at the Paris Olympics, Italy has clinched the gold medal in women’s volleyball after defeating the reigning champions, the U.S. team. It was a moment of glory for Italy, especially for Monica De Gennaro, who has been on this Olympic journey three times before without a medal.

At 37 years old, De Gennaro couldn’t believe her dream had finally come true. She expressed her joy, saying, “It feels special. It is something unique.” The victory came in straight sets with scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 25-17. Throughout the tournament, the Italians only lost one set, showcasing their dominance.

The atmosphere in the South Paris Arena was electric, filled with fans waving flags from both Italy and the U.S. As the match point was scored by Paola Egonu, who had an incredible match with 22 points, the Italian players couldn’t contain their excitement. They collapsed to the court and then erupted into hugs and cheers, tossing De Gennaro into the air in celebration.

This victory marks a historic achievement for Italy, as it is their first-ever medal in women’s volleyball at the Olympics, after finishing in fifth place in previous Games. Alessia Orro shared how much this win means for the team, highlighting all the hard work and sacrifices they made to reach this moment.

The U.S. team leaves Paris with a silver medal, adding to their storied legacy as the most successful country in Olympic volleyball history. American player Jordyn Poulter reflected on their journey, saying she felt proud to have competed on the last day of the Olympics, despite falling short.

Both teams had a rigorous path to the final. Italy swept Turkey, while the U.S. beat Brazil in a five-set thriller. U.S. coach Karch Kiraly had made strategic changes to the lineup after a tough loss, bringing a renewed focus to the team. However, on this day, it was Italy’s strength and execution that shone through, sealing their victory.
