Alpine has announced that Jack Doohan will join the Formula 1 team as a full-time race driver starting in the 2025 season. Doohan, who is currently the team’s reserve driver, will replace Esteban Ocon and partner Pierre Gasly, marking a significant moment in his career.

The 21-year-old Australian driver has been a member of Alpine’s academy since 2022. He previously parted ways with the Red Bull junior program to pursue his ambitions in Formula 1. Doohan is the son of renowned motorcycle champion Mick Doohan and has built an impressive racing resume, finishing third in the 2023 F2 championship with three victories to his name.

Doohan expressed his excitement regarding his promotion, stating, ‘I am so happy to secure promotion into a full-time race seat in 2025 with BWT Alpine F1 Team.’ He thanked the senior management for their trust and emphasized his commitment to preparing for this opportunity.

Oliver Oakes, the new team principal who has recently taken over from Bruno Famin, highlighted Doohan’s potential and hard work in his role. ‘We are very excited to promote Jack into the race seat from next season and, in doing so, giving him the opportunity to showcase his skill and talent in Formula 1,’ Oakes mentioned in a statement.

As a part of his ongoing development, Doohan will continue to fulfill his responsibilities as a reserve driver for the remainder of the current season. This includes participating in regular testing with the 2022-spec A522 F1 car and performing simulator duties during selected race weekends.

In preparation for his Formula 1 debut, expected to take place at the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in 2024, Doohan has amassed considerable experience over the past two years. His commitment to become the first graduate of the Alpine Academy to secure a race seat is seen as a promising development for the team’s driver program.

With this announcement, Doohan becomes the 19th Australian to enter a grand prix and the first from Queensland. The number of Australian drivers in Formula 1 is set to reach three next season, with Oscar Piastri confirmed at McLaren and Daniel Ricciardo‘s future still uncertain.

Jack Doohan’s elevation reinforces Alpine’s commitment to nurturing young talent through its driver development program, exemplified by his determination to remain in the spotlight after choosing not to race this season. His extensive testing and simulator work contributed significantly to the team’s performance improvements throughout the year.
