Jack Flaherty’s Journey to Dominance Averts Trade to Yankees
Jack Flaherty nearly became a member of the New York Yankees this season, with a preliminary trade agreement reportedly in place, as revealed by baseball insider Ken Rosenthal on the program Foul Territory. The Yankees, however, decided to withdraw after examining Flaherty’s medical history, which opened the door for the Los Angeles Dodgers to acquire the pitcher.
Since joining the Dodgers, Flaherty has experienced a resurgence in his form. He showcased an exceptional pitching performance by allowing only two hits over seven scoreless innings, contributing significantly to the Dodgers’ 9-0 triumph over the New York Mets. This victory took place in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium on Sunday evening.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Flaherty’s performance, describing it as “just a pitching clinic.” Flaherty’s former teammate from the St. Louis Cardinals noted, “They just didn’t look comfortable the whole day,” a testament to the pitcher’s extraordinary outing.
Catcher Will Smith highlighted Flaherty’s presence on the mound, stating, “He’s got an aura about him. He’s got intensity about him. He’s had a great year, obviously having great years in the past, and we’re fortunate he’s pitching for us in the postseason and giving us shutties.”
Flaherty’s path included a challenging 2023 season split between the Cardinals and the Orioles, after which he signed with the Detroit Tigers on a one-year deal. While with the Tigers, he compiled a 2.95 ERA over 18 starts. His performance improved after the trade to the Dodgers, concluding the regular season with a 6-2 record and a 3.55 ERA in ten starts.
Reflecting on Flaherty’s transition to success with the Dodgers, Roberts expressed confidence, “I think we’re getting Jack at the perfect time… he’s a veteran player, he’s been through a lot, the highs, lows, and found his way back.”
As Flaherty prepares to take the mound in Game 5 at Citi Field—a potential series clincher—he stands on the threshold of propelling the Dodgers to the World Series.
