Jackie Chan Returns to Iconic Role in ‘The Karate Kid: Legends’

Beverly Hills, California — Jackie Chan bursts with energy as he steps into the Waldorf Astoria for a photoshoot. At 71, he remains the same animated and playful actor fans have adored for decades. Known for his infectious personality, Chan immediately transitions into character, showcasing his humor with exaggerated stunts and playful expressions.
The beloved actor is preparing for the release of ‘The Karate Kid: Legends,’ his latest film set to hit theaters this summer via Sony Pictures. Nearly 15 years after his last portrayal of Mr. Han, Chan describes his eagerness to revisit the role. ‘I was for sure super excited. It’s been almost 15 years!’ he remarks.
In this new installment, Mr. Han travels to New York City, where his path crosses with Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio. This new chapter unfolds after the final season of ‘Cobra Kai,’ introducing future audiences to fresh characters while deepening the Karate Kid narrative.
‘We both aged 15 years, that’s for sure!’ Chan jokes, adding, ‘But Mr. Han is still the shifu who cares most about his students.’
The film features a young kung fu talent, Li Fong, played by Ben Wang, who navigates the challenges of life in a new city. Initially hesitant about competing in karate, Li is compelled to step up for a friend, leading to a riveting collaboration that blends kung fu and karate traditions.
Chan emphasizes that the partnership between Mr. Han and LaRusso exemplifies teamwork, saying, ‘It’s the first time we had this opportunity to work together and teach this lucky kid both karate and kung fu.’
The climax of the film promises an exhilarating rooftop showdown, showcasing Li’s journey as a martial artist. Fans can anticipate that the heart and action present in prior films remain intact. Yet, when asked for specific details, Chan maintains his playful secrecy with a cheeky, ‘I can’t say too much!’
Beyond his cinematic pursuits, Chan reflects on a lifetime committed to redefining action filmmaking. He has rewritten the rules, performing his own stunts and pushing boundaries throughout his career. Injuries have accompanied his daring choices, but he sees these experiences as integral to his identity as an action star.
Chan is also passionate about philanthropy, actively involved in education and wildlife conservation efforts, particularly for pandas. He notes, ‘I want to ensure future generations can see the world too.’ His charity work stems from a desire to give back, having overcome a challenging upbringing.
As he prepares for the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards, Chan, embodying a spirit of joy and gratitude, carries his beloved stuffed panda toys. He embodies the idea of living life fully, always striving for new challenges in film and beyond. ‘I’m still on the road,’ he concludes, smiling broadly, motivated to continue sharing his passion with the world.
