Jacque Vaughn Returns as Kansas Basketball Assistant Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) – Former Kansas basketball star Jacque Vaughn is returning to the program as an assistant coach. Vaughn, who had over five years of experience as a head coach in the NBA with the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets, steps in after longtime assistant Norm Roberts announced his retirement.
Bill Self, the head coach of Kansas, expressed excitement about Vaughn’s hiring, stating, “We wanted somebody that was different than what we are when Norm left. Jacque is a beloved player here who has an impressive coaching background, including working with NBA legends as an assistant to Gregg Popovich.”
Vaughn, a two-time All-American at Kansas, played a key role in one of the school’s best teams during the 1996-97 season. He played for 12 seasons in the NBA, winning a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2007. After retiring, Vaughn moved into coaching, with his first head coaching role in 2012 with the Orlando Magic.
His time with the Nets included stints as both an assistant and interim head coach. Vaughn’s teams reached the playoffs but he was ultimately let go amid struggles in the 2023-24 season. Reflecting on his return, Vaughn said, “I’m truly honored and overwhelmed with excitement to return to my alma mater.”
Self also sees Vaughn as a mentor for top prospect, Jaden McDaniels, who is favored to be the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Vaughn’s previous coaching expertise is viewed as a significant asset as Kansas prepares for the upcoming season, as Self remarked, “We think he helps us Day 1 in all areas.”
The trend of hiring NBA coaches continues to grow in college basketball, with several recent coaching changes reflecting this shift. Vaughn’s return is a testament to the program’s commitment to excellence and player development.
