Jaedyn Shaw Returns to San Diego with U.S. Women’s National Team

EL CAJON, Calif. — One month after being traded to the North Carolina Courage, Jaedyn Shaw is back in San Diego with the U.S. women’s national team. The former Wave midfielder participated in a training session on Tuesday at San Diego FC’s new performance center as the team prepared for its final match of the SheBelieves Cup.
Speaking to reporters, Shaw explained her reasons for leaving San Diego. ‘For me, I just wanted to be playing a certain style,’ Shaw said. ‘I think being in this environment with the USWNT has helped me see that and know what parts of my game that I need to push.’
Shaw emphasized her desire for growth under the guidance of the national team. ‘I think, for me, that was kind of the biggest part, just knowing what part of my game that I wanted to continue to push and drive. Hopefully, that helps me in this environment,’ she added.
Shaw’s journey in the NWSL began in San Diego, where she signed with the Wave at just 17 years old. During her time with the team, she was pivotal in their success, helping them secure their first-ever NWSL Shield in 2023 and recording 14 goals and four assists in 61 appearances. ‘There’s so many memories,’ Shaw reflected. ‘I feel like I’ve grown so much as a person over the last 2 1/2 years, so, for me, I’m just really happy to look back on it.’
Sources indicate that Shaw requested a trade from the Wave last year. Her interest in playing in North Carolina has roots in her earlier years when, at age 14, she committed to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before making the leap to professional soccer.
On the national stage, Shaw is establishing herself as a key player. The 20-year-old played the full 90 minutes in a recent 2-1 victory against Australia, providing an assist to Lynn Biyendolo. ‘I’m just really grateful,’ she said of her time on the national team.
The U.S. is preparing to face Japan on Wednesday at Snapdragon Stadium, competing for its sixth consecutive SheBelieves Cup title. Meanwhile, Japan, a seasoned squad, aims for its first championship. Head coach Emma Hayes will further evaluate her roster in this crucial matchup.
