Jaguars’ Doug Pederson Reaffirms Travis Etienne Jr. as RB1 Despite Tank Bigsby’s Impressive Performance
In the aftermath of the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ 32-16 victory over the New England Patriots, head coach Doug Pederson has made it clear that Travis Etienne Jr. remains the team’s starting running back, despite an impressive performance by Tank Bigsby. Etienne missed the game due to a hamstring injury, allowing Bigsby to step into the lead role and deliver a standout performance with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Pederson emphasized that Etienne’s position is secure, stating, “I’m a believer where injury doesn’t replace your position. I think you have to have a fair competition for us. We’re blessed to have two really good running backs right now. When Etienne comes back, he’s just as explosive, just as good, just as powerful, and it’s still his job.”.
Bigsby’s performance was notable, particularly in the second half of the game, where he punished the Patriots’ defense with his physical running style. Despite his success, Bigsby acknowledged that his role is to support the team in any way possible, saying, “I just do whatever I have to do for this team to win. My job, whatever my role is, whatever I have to do, take advantage of the opportunities of course, but just come out and help this team win and that’s what I try to do.”.
The Jaguars are fortunate to have two capable running backs, with Bigsby averaging 6.2 yards per carry this season. However, Pederson’s commitment to Etienne, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons, remains unwavering. Etienne’s return to the lineup is anticipated, and when he does, he will resume his role as the team’s primary running back.
