Jaguars Narrow Coaching Search: Coen, Johnson Emerge as Top Candidates
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars have conducted 10 interviews in their search for a new head coach, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson emerging as frontrunners. Coen, fresh off a standout season with the Buccaneers, impressed during his virtual interview, while Johnson remains a highly sought-after candidate after declining head-coaching opportunities last year.
“Liam Coen was nothing short of outstanding in his interview,” a senior NFL executive told Sports Illustrated. “His knowledge of the game, both offensively and defensively, was eye-opening, as well as his understanding of how he would lead a franchise.” Coen, whose Buccaneers are now out of the playoffs, is eligible to be hired immediately, while Johnson’s availability hinges on the Lions’ playoff outcome.
The Jaguars are expected to conduct second-round interviews next week, with in-person meetings permitted starting Jan. 20. If the Lions lose to the Washington Commanders, Johnson and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn could be available for in-person interviews as early as Monday. However, a Lions win would delay their availability until after the conference championship games.
Johnson, who interviewed virtually with the Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, and New England Patriots during the Lions’ bye week, has been praised for his leadership and offensive acumen. “I think it would be safe to say [Coen and Johnson] are 1A and 1B on their shortlist,” the NFL executive said. Johnson, who changed agents this offseason, has emphasized his focus on the Lions’ playoff run, declining to discuss potential head-coaching opportunities in detail.
Meanwhile, Glenn, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, has also garnered attention as a potential head-coaching candidate. “He is more prepared to be a head coach than maybe anybody I’ve ever met,” Johnson said of Glenn. “He wants that, and I think he’s going to do a phenomenal job in charge.”
The Jaguars, known for their methodical approach to coaching searches, are expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. With Coen and Johnson leading the pack, the team is poised to secure a high-caliber replacement for former head coach Doug Pederson.
