Jaguars Planning to Release Veteran WR Christian Kirk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars are preparing to release veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This move, which will save the team $10.732 million against the salary cap, comes as part of a broader strategy under new general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen.
Kirk, 28, recently completed the third year of a four-year, $72 million contract signed in 2022. During his first season with the Jaguars, he achieved career highs with 84 receptions, 1,108 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. However, injuries plagued his performance in subsequent seasons, limiting him to just eight games last year due to a core muscle injury.
In an unfortunate turn for Kirk, his efficiency declined significantly over the past two seasons, culminating in 27 catches for 379 yards and one touchdown in 2023. The Jaguars now enter free agency with their 2023 sixth-round draft pick, Parker Washington, expected to step up as the primary slot receiver.
Previously, Kirk spent the first four years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, where he totaled 236 receptions for 2,902 yards and 17 touchdowns. His career statistics reflect a strong potential, as he has played 93 games and secured 404 receptions for 5,176 yards and 29 touchdowns overall.
The decision to part ways with Kirk signals the Jaguars’ intent to reshape their receiving corps this offseason. As the team looks to enhance its roster, many expect them to pursue both veteran and young talent, particularly in light of the competitive free agency market for wide receivers.
Sources indicate that while Kirk’s injury history may hinder his value, he could emerge as an intriguing option for teams seeking to add depth to their receiving lineup. The dynamics of the free-agent wide receiver market are shifting, and Kirk’s future remains to be seen as he prepares to enter the upcoming season as a free agent.
