Jake Knapp Makes History with Stunning 59 in Cognizant Classic Opener

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Jake Knapp made history on Thursday, carding a stunning bogey-free round of 59 during the opening day of the Cognizant Classic at PGA National Resort. The achievement places him among an elite group of golfers who have shot under 60 in a PGA Tour event.
Knapp, the current No. 99 player in the world, began his round with five consecutive birdies and never looked back, finishing with a total of 12 birdies. His performance marked the 15th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history, just one shot shy of the record set by Jim Furyk.
“It’s just one of those days where everything was kind of clicking,” Knapp said, reflecting on his remarkable opening round. “I thought I played well.”
The 30-year-old California native turned professional in 2016, earning his first PGA Tour title at the Mexican Open in February 2024. After making the cut at last year’s Cognizant Classic, where he tied for fourth, Knapp’s performance this year showcased his rising talent and determination.
Knapp’s girlfriend, Makena White, was in attendance, celebrating the achievement with him immediately after he finished on the 18th green. White, a medical sales representative from Ottawa, Canada, and Knapp have been dating since 2023. “That was crazy!” she exclaimed, sharing in the excitement of his historic moment.
With ideal weather conditions, minimal wind, and a largely defenseless PGA National course on the morning of his round, Knapp capitalized on the opportunity to achieve greatness. He held a four-shot lead heading into the final round, setting up anticipation for the remaining competition.
Notable golfers like Daniel Berger and Rickie Fowler also performed well, with Berger posting a bogey-free round of 63. However, none could overshadow Knapp’s extraordinary feat. “You’ve got to tip your hat to him,” said Billy Horschel. “He shot a 12-under par 59 at PGA National, which no one ever thought.”
As he gears up for the remaining rounds of the tournament, Knapp is aware of the weight of expectations but remains focused on his game. “Whether I shot 89 or 59, I’m going to come back out and do my job tomorrow,” he stated confidently.
The Cognizant Classic continues this weekend, with Knapp seeking to maintain his lead and secure another victory on the tour.
