Jake Oettinger Shines as Stars Lead Series Against Jets

DALLAS — Jake Oettinger is proving himself as a reliable goaltender for the Dallas Stars in the NHL playoffs. On May 11, 2025, he guided the Stars to a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 3 of their second-round series.
After the game, Oettinger shared his strategy of talking to himself during games to maintain focus. “Just make that next save,” he muttered as the action unfolded. This technique helps him stay engaged, especially when he is not facing many shots.
Oettinger has established himself as a strong player during the playoffs, second only to Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers in postseason victories with 29 over the last four seasons. His postseason save percentage of .915 places him among the best, trailing only Igor Shesterkin and Freddie Andersen.
“Jake has an ability to raise his level this time of year; he’s shown that,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. He emphasized how Oettinger performs better as the stakes rise throughout the playoffs.
Across the ice, Connor Hellebuyck, Oettinger’s counterpart for the Jets, is working through struggles this postseason. While Hellebuyck is a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, he has faced challenges, particularly on the road, where he has lost four playoff games in a row this spring.
The rivalry between Oettinger and Hellebuyck intensified during the recent 4 Nations Face-Off, where they both represented Team USA. Fans chanted in support of their respective goalies, reinforcing the competition’s intensity.
As the series progresses, discussions have begun regarding who should be the starting goalie for Team USA at the upcoming Milan Olympics. Oettinger expressed interest in the role and is motivated to improve. “If I play well and continue to get better, I give myself a chance,” he said.
Defenseman Alex Petrovic lauded Oettinger’s impact on the team, calling him a “rock” and expressing confidence in their chances when he is in goal. The Stars lead the series 2-1, and with Oettinger’s leadership, they look to continue their playoff success.
As the competition heats up, both Oettinger and Hellebuyck know that their performances will have lasting implications not only for the playoffs but for their Olympic futures.
