James Madison University Dominates UNC in High-Scoring Game
In a stunning first half performance, the James Madison University (JMU) Dukes lead the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels 53-21. The game, played at Kenan Stadium, displayed JMU’s offensive prowess as they took control early and maintained dominance throughout the first and second quarters.
JMU’s defense played a crucial role in the first half, recovering two fumbles and intercepting a pass from the Tar Heels, effectively stopping UNC’s offensive drives. This defensive pressure set the stage for the Dukes’ explosive attack.
The Dukes, coming into the game with a 2-0 record, quickly set the tone with a 50-yard field goal by redshirt junior Noe Ruelas. The early field goal was followed by an impactful blocked punt, recovered by redshirt sophomore Jayden Mines, who scored a touchdown to extend JMU’s lead. Senior cornerback Terrence Spence was instrumental in this play.
JMU’s quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, had a remarkable performance, overcoming a slow start to throw for four touchdowns and rushing for two more. Notably, Barnett connected with senior wide receiver Omarion Dollison on a 69-yard touchdown pass, marking one of several explosive plays that defined JMU’s offensive strategy.
The game saw JMU achieve its highest-scoring first half in the football program’s history, demonstrating a significant improvement from their earlier games this season. The offensive coordination by Dean Kennedy, who operated from the sidelines for the first time this season, showcased an array of strategic plays, including flea flickers and inventive formations.
For UNC, who held a 3-0 record going into this game, the match marked one of their worst defensive performances, matching a previous record for points allowed in a half. Despite efforts to rally, including a touchdown by running back Omarion Hampton, the Tar Heels struggled to contain the Dukes’ relentless offense.
As the game continued into the second half, JMU maintained their lead, with UNC failing to capitalize on several opportunities due to continuous turnovers. The Dukes’ comprehensive victory over the Tar Heels added to their growing reputation after a notable win against Virginia in the previous season.
