Beijing, ChinaJannik Sinner fought hard to defeat French qualifier Terence Atmane 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 in the second round of the China Open on Saturday. Sinner, the top seed, faced a tough challenge, especially after losing the second set.

Atmane, who had previously lost to Sinner in Cincinnati, made things difficult for the World No. 2. He broke Sinner’s serve three times in the second set, showcasing his depth and precision, but ultimately could not maintain the pressure in the final set.

“The game style he plays is quite unique and he is a lefty and we don’t have so many. He is a great player and has improved a lot again since Cincinnati,” Sinner said after the match. “Today he struggled a little bit in the third set with some cramp but it was a tough, tricky match.”

Sinner’s victory marks his 13th consecutive hard-court quarter-final. He aims to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings, currently trailing Carlos Alcaraz by 2,590 points.

“I was twice up with a break in the second set and I couldn’t use it, but this is the sport and this happens,” he noted. “I am very happy to be through to the next round.”

Looking ahead, Sinner is set to face World No. 57 Fabian Marozsan, who defeated Alexandre Muller in the previous round.

Earlier in the tournament, Alex de Minaur also secured his spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2). De Minaur, with 33 hard-court wins this year, is striving for a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals for the second consecutive year.
