In a thrilling encounter at the Shanghai Masters, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner overcame American Ben Shelton to advance to the quarter-finals. The match, held on Wednesday, saw Sinner defeating Shelton in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(1), reversing the result from their meeting last year at the same stage.

Sinner, currently the world number one, showcased resilience and skill against Shelton, who boasted an impressive 95% first-serve rate in the opening set. “It was very tough. He played only first serves, except one second serve,” Sinner remarked, highlighting the challenge posed by Shelton’s formidable serve.

The 23-year-old Italian, leading the ATP Tour in wins with 62 and six titles this season, has now reached his seventh ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final this year. This accomplishment matches the record for most quarter-finals in a single season since Alexander Zverev achieved the same in 2018.

Shelton, despite his ferocious start and leading the opening set, could not capitalize on his opportunities. Sinner managed to save seven break points throughout the match, displaying remarkable composure and tactical awareness.

Following his victory over Shelton, Sinner is set to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Medvedev, ranked fifth in the world, secured his place by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in an equally competitive match earlier.

Medvedev’s win over Tsitsipas improved his head-to-head record against the Greek player to 10-4. The Russian is aiming to solidify his position in the ATP Live Race to Turin, having previously won the tournament in 2021.
