Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Shanghai Masters Match Due to Cramps
MILANO, Italy — Jannik Sinner, the world No. 2 tennis player, retired from his match against Tallon Griekspoor at the Masters tournament in Shanghai on October 5, 2025, due to cramps. The match score was 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, and 2-3 when Sinner had to leave the court.
Sinner began the third set well but soon experienced significant physical difficulties, prompting medical assistance from a physiotherapist. Despite his efforts, he could not continue and ultimately surrendered the match after struggling with mobility on the court.
Griekspoor, ranked 27th in the world, had put Sinner under pressure, especially in the second set, where Sinner failed to convert six break points. The Dutch player capitalized on his opportunity and broke Sinner’s serve to take the second set.
After Sinner’s withdrawal, Griekspoor advanced to the round of 16, with players noting the extreme playing conditions in Shanghai that may have contributed to Sinner’s physical struggles. Griekspoor expressed sympathy for Sinner, stating, “It’s not how anyone wants to win.”
This marks the seventh career retirement for Sinner, who has faced physical challenges in previous matches as well. Among his other retirements are those against notable players like Andrey Rublev and Carlos Alcaraz.
As Sinner exits the tournament, Djokovic has successfully advanced after defeating Yannick Hanfmann in a tough contest. Other matches in the tournament continue to unfold as players vie for advancement in this prestigious event.
