Jasmine Paolini Advances After Close Call at Roland Garros

Paris, France – Jasmine Paolini, last year’s French Open runner-up, fought through a tough three-set match to defeat Yuan Yue of China 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, on Sunday. This victory marks Paolini’s seventh consecutive win as she moves into the second round of the 2025 Roland Garros.
Paolini, ranked No. 4, is fresh off a historic title win in Rome, Italy, where she became the first Italian woman in 40 years to secure the Internazionali BNL d'Italia singles title. “It’s great to be back here,” she said on court after her match. “Last year, playing Roland Garros and the Olympics, it’s a special place. I love this city, this club, and this surface as well. Hopefully, I’m gonna play a little bit better the next round, and we’ll see.”
The match, held on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, showcased Paolini’s resilience, especially after Yuan leveled the game by winning the second set. Yuan, ranked 87th, showed promise by taking an early break in the final set, but Paolini quickly regained control.
“I won quite easily the first set, then Yuan started to play better,” Paolini commented. “I’m happy I fought until the end. It was tough going down 3-2 with a break, but I did it.” After leveling at 3-3 in the decider, Paolini dominated, winning 14 consecutive points to secure her place in round two.
In her next match, Paolini awaits the winner of the contest between Australians Maya Joint and Ajla Tomljanovic, happening on Monday. Joint, 19, recently clinched her first WTA singles title and rose to No. 53 in the rankings. This will be Paolini’s first encounter with either player.
Paolini’s winning streak highlights her status as a top contender on the clay courts, having previously reached the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in recent years.
