Jason Day’s Masters Fashion Approval Under Scrutiny Again

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jason Day, the Australian golfer and former world No. 1, revealed Tuesday that he was required to submit his outfit choices for the 2025 Masters Tournament. This new measure comes after Day faced backlash over his bold fashion statement during last year’s event.
Day, 37, parted ways with Nike at the beginning of 2024 to join Malbon Golf, and had planned to showcase a range of unique outfits for the season’s first major. However, after receiving feedback from Augusta National officials regarding his controversial attire last year, he altered his plans. “We kind of did, but we kind of cut everything in half,” Day said. “With what we’re supposed to wear, they said that’s a little bit much, but that’s OK.”
The golfer made headlines in the 2024 Masters when he sported a bold blue outfit, complete with a sweater vest that read “Malbon Golf Championship” in large lettering. By the second round, however, officials requested he remove the garment, prompting Day to comply. “It was a little bit much on Thursday,” he acknowledged.
Reflecting on last year’s controversy, Day has expressed a willingness to adapt his style to maintain respect for the tournament. He stated, “I understand. We’re here for the tournament. This is why we come every April.” Day has participated in the Masters 14 times, finishing as a runner-up in his debut in 2011.
This season, Augusta National mandated that Day submit his outfit ideas in advance—a first for the frequent competitor. “They asked to see scripting of mine because I’ve always been pretty, you know, neutral and down the middle,” Day noted. “This year, they asked because obviously what happened last year.”
His apparel sponsor, Malbon Golf, expressed frustration over the restrictions but acknowledged the necessity of the guidelines. “It was never our intention to do anything except make people maybe think, ‘Wow, if this dude looks cool…and I could be him, maybe I’ll start picking up golf,’” said Stephen Malbon, the brand’s founder.
Day’s attire for the first round of the 2025 tournament included a black cap, black pants, and a colorful Futura poly performance polo—a piece influenced by a collaboration with graffiti artist Futura. However, Augusta National specified that he could either wear patterned tops or bottoms, but not both. Day complied with this request as he aimed to uphold the tournament’s standards.
His fashion choices have not only sparked conversations on the course but also reflect a broader discussion on dress codes in professional golf. “I just want to make sure that I’m not trying to do anything that’s too crazy or outlandish to disrespect the tournament,” Day emphasized.
As fans await his debut on April 10 alongside Philip Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, they are left wondering about future outfit choices, particularly given complaints about golf fashion’s traditional constraints. Day expressed his enjoyment in pushing for change but remains committed to respecting the game’s longstanding traditions.
