Jason Kidd Confirms Commitment to Mavericks Amid Knicks Interest
Dallas, Texas — Jason Kidd has confirmed his commitment to the Dallas Mavericks despite interest from the New York Knicks. Kidd, entering his fifth season as coach, addressed the rumors during a press conference before the Mavericks faced the Knicks on Wednesday night.
“I was never thinking about leaving Dallas,” Kidd said. “I love Dallas. I love working for [Mavericks governor] Patrick [Dumont]. We have a lot of work to be done, to be a champion, and I’m all in to be able to do that.”
Kidd’s ties to the Knicks stem from his time spent there as a player during the 2012-13 season, and he also has a close relationship with Knicks star Jalen Brunson, whom he coached in Dallas during the 2021-22 season. Reports surfaced earlier this year that the Knicks were interested in Kidd to fill their head coaching vacancy after Tom Thibodeau was let go.
Former Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison assured reporters that Kidd would remain the team’s head coach following the selection of Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. “Are there rumors out there about J-Kidd? I thought I shut those down. Yes, he will be the head coach next year,” Harrison stated.
With the Mavericks struggling to a 4-11 start, Kidd’s leadership will be crucial in guiding them back to playoff contention. “It never crossed my mind to leave Dallas,” Kidd said, emphasizing his dedication to the team.
Dumont expressed confidence in Kidd’s abilities, saying, “Our entire organization deeply appreciates Coach Kidd’s leadership, focus and positive energy… He embodies everything our organization wants in a leader, and I am happy he will be here for many years to come.”
Despite the challenges, Kidd is determined to pursue a championship in Dallas. “I think it’s safe to say we all enjoy being wanted, so that was a nice touch,” he added.
