Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has long been an admirer of Jasprit Bumrah‘s exceptional bowling abilities. In a recent revelation, Shastri shared a remarkable compliment that Bumrah received from legendary West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts. This praise adds another feather to Bumrah’s cap in his journey to becoming a top-ranked Test bowler.

Shastri reminisced about a memorable incident in 2019 when Bumrah’s outstanding performance against the West Indies left a lasting impression on Roberts and Curtly Ambrose. During a two-Test series in the Caribbean, Bumrah’s bowling prowess was on full display, helping India secure commanding victories in Antigua and Jamaica with a haul of 13 wickets, including a hat-trick.

After witnessing Bumrah’s dominance, Andy Roberts approached the Indian pacer in Antigua to convey high praise. Recognizing Bumrah’s talent, Roberts expressed that Bumrah could have seamlessly fit into the formidable West Indies pace attack of the past, a unit led by the likes of Marshall, Garner, Croft, and Holding, showcasing the immense respect he had for Bumrah’s skill.

Shastri also highlighted Bumrah’s unique bowling style, emphasizing the precision in his release point compared to his teammates. Bumrah’s ability to consistently bowl yorkers, bouncers, and hard lengths with a straight wrist sets him apart from other bowlers and makes him a potent force on the field. His dedication to mastering various deliveries has propelled him to the upper echelons of fast bowling.

Following his stellar performances in Test cricket, Bumrah showcased his prowess on the T20 World Cup stage, where he played a pivotal role in India’s triumph against South Africa. With 15 wickets in the tournament, Bumrah’s impact was undeniable, leading to him being named the Player of the Tournament. His crucial contributions in the final helped India break an 11-year global trophy drought, underscoring his value to the team.
