DETROIT, Mich. — Javier Báez, a key player for the Detroit Tigers, has rebounded impressively after struggling in previous seasons. As the Tigers open the 2025 season, his performance has been critical in their early success.

Báez, who signed a six-year, $140 million deal in November 2021, faced challenges in his first three seasons with the team, including injuries that kept him from a late playoff push last year. However, with a combination of health improvements and swing adjustments, he has started the season strong, boasting a .300 batting average with three home runs.

Despite having a shaky start against the Texas Rangers, hitting hitless in two games, Báez has quickly become a valuable player. With an OPS of .791, he ranks fourth on the team in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) at 1.1, supporting a team that currently holds the American League’s best record.

Last summer, Báez underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right hip to address lingering issues that affected his mobility in past seasons. He began his rehab during the Tigers’ playoff push and reported to spring training eager to make an impact.

“It was very hard,” Báez said in February, recalling his recovery process. “After the surgery, I was working out like I was coming back for the playoffs.” His commitment has paid off, as he has played multiple positions, including center field, which he had not occupied in a regular-season game before this year.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Báez’s versatility. As injuries have impacted other outfielders, Báez stepped up, taking advantage of an opportunity that helped position him back in the lineup.

“If I stay healthy, I’ll do whatever, man,” Báez declared. With an evolving batting stance and adjustments to his swing mechanics, he is hitting more consistently and making solid contact.

As the season progresses, the challenge will be balancing Báez’s current performance with the return of injured players, including outfielders who are nearing a comeback. Nevertheless, his contributions thus far are crucial as the Tigers navigate a path to potential playoff contention.
