CLEVELAND, Ohio — Jaylon Tyson is proving his commitment to the Cleveland Cavaliers after making bold promises before the season started. On Monday night at TD Garden, he delivered a standout performance, scoring a season-high 19 points in just his third start this season.

The second-year swingman shot 8 of 11 from the field and played aggressively on both ends of the court. His dynamic movement without the ball made him a key player, especially when the Cavs struggled to find their rhythm.

“Offense isn’t my primary focus,” Tyson shared after the game. He explained that with so much talent on the team, he and fellow role player Craig Porter Jr. are focused on defense and securing rebounds.

Tyson’s mindset has shifted since his college days where he was known primarily for his scoring. He reflected on this transformation in his postgame interview, stating, “I’m not worried about the offensive stuff. I trust my teammates, and they have my back.”

Teammate Donovan Mitchell has praised Tyson’s maturity and hunger for improvement since training camp, noting, “He’s willing to play any role to help the team win.”

In a recent game against the Detroit Pistons, Tyson demonstrated his defensive skills by limiting his opponents, allowing Derrick White only one three-pointer and forcing Payton Pritchard to miss all four of his attempts.

Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson expressed confidence in Tyson’s playstyle, saying he is “fine” with the number of fouls his players are accumulating as part of playing a physical game. “There’s a trade-off,” Atkinson acknowledged. “We’re willing to live with it.”

Tyson himself admitted he’s still adjusting to his role, emphasizing the importance of gradual improvement. “I need to focus on hitting open shots, playing defense, and bringing energy,” he said. He understands the necessity of taking “baby steps” in the league.

With the season still in its early stages, Tyson is optimistic about his development. “I haven’t played my best basketball yet,” he said. However, he remains committed to contributing to the Cavaliers’ success, stating, “He’s going to take a big step for us,” Mitchell echoed earlier sentiments about Tyson’s upcoming impact.
