BOSTON, Mass. — Jayson Tatum has already established a remarkable NBA career, winning a championship and earning first-team All-NBA honors three times within his first seven seasons. As he begins his eighth season, expectations are high that he will achieve first-team All-NBA recognition for a fifth consecutive year.

The Boston Celtics standout is also a favorite to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy again this year, potentially marking a historic second consecutive championship for the franchise.

Following a successful start to the current season, former Celtics player Paul Pierce expressed his belief that if Tatum wins another title, he will be in the conversation among the best wing players in NBA history. “If he gets a chip in another couple of weeks, we’re going to have uncomfortable conversations about where he stands in [NBA] history,” Pierce said. “People don’t want to give him credit, but we’re gonna be like, ‘Shoot, is he better than [Kevin Durant]?’ one day.”

Pierce praised Tatum’s capabilities, noting, “His statistics are on line. He’s heading in the KD direction. He can do everything KD can do.” Despite the comparisons, Durant boasts superior regular-season achievements, including one MVP award and three second-place MVP finishes during his first eight seasons. Durant also averaged 27.6 points per game compared to Tatum’s 23.6.

While Durant outshines in most statistical categories, Tatum made history by scoring more points in the playoffs through the first seven seasons of any NBA player, tallying 2,711 points. He also holds the top playoff performance statistics among his peers, with rankings of first in wins (55), points (2,348), and 3-pointers made (242).

However, Kevin Garnett, another former Celtics great, urged caution on escalating comparisons between Tatum and Durant, highlighting Tatum’s team and growth potential. “He’s still growing. He’s having some good years,” Garnett said. “He’s got another level in him. He hasn’t hit that, though.”

As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring Tatum’s pursuit of NBA greatness and whether he can lead the Celtics to a second consecutive title.
