Jayson Tatum Responds to ‘Softest Celtics Superstar’ Jab from Ex-NBA Player
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum found himself at the center of an unprovoked critique ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets. Former NBA guard Brandon Jennings labeled Tatum the “softest Celtics superstar ever” during a segment on the “Gil's Arena” podcast, sparking a heated exchange.
Tatum, who recently signed a record-breaking $315 million extension with the Celtics, responded subtly on social media. He posted, “SoFtesT SuPeRstar in CeLtiC HiStoRy,” accompanied by a laughing face emoji. The five-time All-Star has been instrumental in Boston’s success, including last season’s championship run, where he averaged 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists in the Finals.
Jennings, a former lottery pick whose career never reached the heights of his high school hype, doubled down on his comments. During the podcast, he questioned Tatum’s toughness, asking, “If you’re so tough, why didn’t you get Finals MVP last year? Why did you let your running mate (Jaylen Brown) do it?”
Tatum’s trainer, Drew Hanlen, came to his defense, calling Jennings’ remarks “pathetic.” Hanlen highlighted Tatum’s leadership and clutch performances, including a 51-point Game 7 performance and his all-around contributions during the Celtics’ championship run.
Jennings, who last played in the NBA in 2018, continued his critique on Instagram, posting, “I’m waiting. May and June is coming. I’ll be waiting in the Garden.” Despite the criticism, Tatum remains focused on his game, posting career highs in rebounds, assists, and steals this season.
The Celtics, currently leading the Eastern Conference, are poised for another deep playoff run. Tatum’s ability to handle criticism and maintain his performance under pressure will be crucial as Boston aims to defend its title.
