Utah Jazz Rookie Collier Assists John Stockton Record

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Jazz rookie guard Collier has officially surpassed the legendary John Stockton‘s franchise rookie-season assist record, accumulating 434 assists as of April 6, 2025. Stockton, a Hall of Fame player, held the previous record of 415 assists for 40 years since his rookie season.

Selected with the No. 29 overall pick from the University of Southern California, Collier has developed a key role in the rebuilding Utah Jazz lineup. In 70 games this season, including 45 starts, the 6-foot-3 player is averaging 8.5 points, 6.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game in approximately 25.8 minutes of play.

Stockton, known for his precise passing, averaged just 18 minutes per game during his first season, making Collier’s achievement standout in the current NBA landscape. Collier’s recent performance reflects both his potential and the evolving nature of the game. Commentator Larsen highlighted, “Collier’s ability to break such a longstanding record is impressive and speaks volumes about his potential moving forward.”

The rookie assists record remains a lofty 868, held by former New York guard Mark Jackson. With only four games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season, Collier has the chance to further increase his assists total and possibly finish in the top 40 for rookie assists in league history.

The Jazz, currently with a record of 16-62, are in the midst of a rebuilding phase. The organization sees promise in Collier’s development as a pivotal player for the future. “We believe Collier’s energy and talent can drive the team forward,” said Jazz management spokesperson. “His record-breaking achievement is just the beginning.”

Despite his success, Stockton continues to hold the all-time franchise records with an astonishing 15,806 career assists over 19 seasons. His career average of 10.5 assists per game remains the second highest in NBA history, only behind Magic Johnson’s 11.2 assists per game.

Citing the significant differences in the basketball landscape over the past 40 years, analysts have pointed out that Collier has the advantage of playing in a more wide-open style of play compared to Stockton’s era. Critics have noted this difference, suggesting it is vital to appreciate each player within their own context. “The game has changed dramatically, and we must recognize that,” stated a local sports analyst.
