Jeff Blashill Becomes New Head Coach of Blackhawks

CHICAGO — Jeff Blashill has been hired as the new head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, according to a league source. This announcement comes after a thorough search for a leader to guide the team through its ongoing rebuild.
Blashill, 51, replaces the interim head coach Derek King and becomes the 42nd head coach in the franchise’s history. The Blackhawks sought someone with coaching experience, and Blashill fits the bill after a challenging stint with the Detroit Red Wings.
In his previous role with Detroit from 2015 to 2022, Blashill faced significant challenges as he inherited an aging team. His first year saw the Red Wings reach the playoffs, but they struggled in subsequent seasons, ultimately resulting in a 204-261-72 record over his tenure.
Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson believes Blashill’s development skills and coaching experience will benefit the team’s young players. Davidson highlighted that Blashill successfully coached in various leagues, including the USHL, NCAA, and AHL.
During his time in the AHL, Blashill led the Grand Rapids Griffins to a Calder Cup championship in 2013. His success with young players is seen as an asset, particularly as the Blackhawks move forward with a roster featuring fresh talent like Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar III, and Arytom Levshunov.
Many in the hockey community believe Blashill’s time as an assistant under Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper has strengthened his coaching acumen. Blashill’s past experiences have led some analysts to argue that he could excel in his second opportunity as an NHL head coach.
While the Blackhawks have endured five consecutive seasons without postseason appearances, Davidson has committed to a rebuilding strategy that emphasizes drafting and player development. Fans and management will be watching closely as Blashill aims to bring the franchise back to competitiveness.
“We are excited to welcome Jeff to the Blackhawks family,” Davidson stated. “His track record of developing players and his coaching skills make him the perfect fit for our current goals.”
Only time will tell if Blashill can turn the fortunes of the struggling franchise and break their playoff drought.
