Jeffrey Springs Reflects on Recovery and New Chapter with A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. — In an exclusive interview on March 21, 2025, new Oakland Athletics pitcher Jeffrey Springs discussed his recovery from Tommy John surgery and the challenges ahead as he prepares for his first season with the team.
Springs, who previously played with the Tampa Bay Rays, was shut down last September despite feeling ready to pitch. ‘I wanted to finish healthy on the active roster,’ he said. ‘The team doctors advised against it, and I trust their judgment.’ Springs had undergone Tommy John surgery, and while he felt pain-free, he acknowledged that the team prioritized his long-term health.
‘There’s a little bit of a dead arm period that most guys experience,’ Springs explained. ‘I was throwing since October, and coming back to pitch in a season is tough. It’s been a relief to feel like myself again this offseason.’
Adjusting back into competition has been a mental hurdle. Springs noted that every throw felt mechanical at first, but he gradually regained confidence. ‘I’ve always just picked the ball up and thrown, but after surgery, I was hyper aware of how I was feeling,’ he said, crediting his rehab team and supportive teammates who also endured similar injuries.
Now, as he faces the upcoming season, Springs feels significantly better. ‘There’s no second-guessing now,’ he said. ‘I’m just trying to pitch and get outs.’ While he noted minor issues with command as he works toward his goals, he remains optimistic. ‘Every day is getting slightly better,’ he said.
Springs also addressed concerns about his endurance after limited innings in previous seasons. ‘It starts with offseason conditioning and workouts,’ he said. ‘My goal is to make 30-plus starts and pitch around 200 innings this season. It’s about preparation from day one.’
On a lighter note, Springs recounted his unique transition from a small-market team to another, as the Athletics are set to play in a minor league stadium due to conditions in Oakland. ‘I might be the only big leaguer traded from a minor league park to another,’ he joked. ‘But honestly, I’m just grateful for the opportunity to wear the uniform. I’m excited to be part of a team that’s trending upward.’
Springs is set to make his first start for the A’s against the Seattle Mariners on March 28, 2025, demonstrating his commitment to contributing to the team’s success.
