NEW YORK — The New York Jets are intensifying their search for a new general manager and head coach, with Washington Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark emerging as a top candidate. Newmark, who joined the Commanders in 2024 after over two decades with the Detroit Lions, is set for a second interview with the Jets this week, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.

The Jets are also conducting a second round of interviews for their head coaching position, with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn among the candidates. Glenn, who worked alongside Newmark during his final three years in Detroit, could potentially form a leadership duo with Newmark if both are hired.

The Commanders’ rapid turnaround under Newmark’s leadership has caught the attention of the Jets, who are seeking to replicate that success. Washington, once a perennial underachiever, secured 12 wins in 2024 under head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters, marking a dramatic shift from the dysfunction of the Dan Snyder era.

“The atmosphere around the organization is night and day to anything fans have experienced for decades,” a source close to the Commanders said. “Washington is a trendy team again, and that success is drawing interest from other franchises.”

Newmark is not the only Commanders staff member attracting attention. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired by the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, is scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears. Kingsbury’s resurgence in Washington has reignited his prospects as a head coaching candidate.

While the Commanders’ success has made them a target for other teams, the organization remains confident in its core leadership. “So long as the Commanders have Peters, Quinn, and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, they’ll be just fine,” the source added. “This core trio represents the foundation for Washington to flourish in the coming years.”

The Jets, meanwhile, are hoping to capitalize on the Commanders’ blueprint for success. With Newmark and Glenn potentially leading the charge, the franchise aims to rebuild its reputation and compete at a higher level in the 2025 season.
