FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are looking to bolster their roster through under-the-radar free agency signings as they focus on building around new quarterback Justin Fields and defensive star Jamien Sherwood. General Manager Darren Mougey and Head Coach Aaron Glenn are exploring bargain options in what analysts describe as a weak class of available players.

One potential target for the Jets is wide receiver Rondale Moore, who was drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. The 5-foot-7, 181-pound Purdue product has yet to live up to expectations despite a promising rookie season. In his debut year, Moore recorded 54 receptions for 485 yards and contributed on the ground with 76 rushing yards, in addition to gaining 462 yards as a kick and punt returner.

Although Moore’s early performance indicated a high ceiling, his time in Arizona was hindered by injuries and a limited role. After three seasons, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons, where he suffered a significant knee injury during training camp last August, sidelining him for the entire 2024 season.

Despite the challenges, Moore enters free agency with a built-in connection to the Jets. Wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, who has retained his position on Glenn’s staff, coached Moore during his time with the Cardinals. Jefferson previously noted his plans to expand Moore’s role, discussing the pursuit of developing a more diverse route tree to enhance his performance.

“That’s one of the things Rondale and I have discussed, growing his route tree, being able to put him outside a little bit more,” Jefferson said after Moore’s rookie season. “His route tree will grow leaps and bounds this year.”

Although Moore’s progress was stunted due to injuries, he still possesses the versatility needed for the Jets’ offensive scheme. Moore’s experience with run-pass option (RPO) concepts with dual-threat quarterbacks could complement Fields’ playing style effectively. His ability to line up both outside and in the slot, along with proficiency in motion plays, makes him a valuable asset. He could also provide notable contributions to the return game.

As he embarks on a potential redemption arc in his tumultuous career, Moore’s health will be a deciding factor in whether he can maximize his opportunities with the Jets.

The Jets are continuing to deepen their roster with signings including linebacker Jamin Davis, tight end Stone Smartt, and defensive tackles Byron Cowart and Jay Tufele, bolstering their depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.

While these players may not be franchise-changers, they bring experience and are part of the Jets’ strategy to secure affordable talent as the free agent market dwindles. Fans are eager to see how these acquisitions will impact the team.
