Jets Request Interview with Saints Interim HC Darren Rizzi
The New York Jets have requested to interview New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi for their head coaching vacancy, according to reports. Rizzi, 54, took over as interim head coach after Dennis Allen was fired earlier this season.
Rizzi began his coaching career at Colgate in 1993 and has since held various roles, including special teams coordinator for the Miami Dolphins and the Saints. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2024 before being named interim head coach. Under his leadership, the Saints posted a 3-5 record, finishing at the bottom of the NFC South.
Rizzi’s coaching journey includes a brief stint as head coach at the University of Rhode Island in 2008, where he led the team to a 3-9 record. Despite the Saints’ struggles this season, Rizzi’s experience and leadership have caught the attention of the Jets, who are seeking a new head coach after a disappointing 5-11 season.
Rizzi’s interim tenure with the Saints included a 3-1 start but ended with three consecutive losses. The Jets are reportedly considering multiple candidates as they look to rebuild under new leadership. Rizzi’s background in special teams and his ability to step into a head coaching role midseason make him a unique candidate.
The Saints will conclude their season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, with Rizzi aiming to finish on a high note. Meanwhile, the Jets’ coaching search is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as they evaluate potential candidates.
