Jets Set to Part Ways with Davante Adams After Disappointing Tenure

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are moving ahead with plans to part ways with wide receiver Davante Adams, following an unsuccessful tenure that lasted just 11 games. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that the team is receiving trade inquiries and may release the six-time Pro Bowler if a trade does not materialize.
Adams, who joined the Jets in October 2024 via a midseason trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, has a hefty salary cap hit of $38.25 million for the upcoming season. This financial burden makes it challenging for the Jets to find a trade partner, as they could save nearly $30 million by releasing him, a move many expect will happen in the coming days.
The decision follows the Jets’ recent separation from quarterback Aaron Rodgers after two unremarkable seasons. Adams’ performance in New York was underwhelming, yielding 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns, marking a stark contrast to his prior success. Despite his top-tier pedigree, the Jets managed only a 5-12 finish during his brief stint with the team.
The Jets hoped Adams would elevate their struggling offense, but the outcome was disappointing. The team struggled to find cohesion, and Adams faced numerous challenges integrating with the offensive scheme. “The whole offense was inefficient all season,” a source close to the team stated. “Even when the opportunities were there, the results didn’t come.”
Despite this, Adams demonstrated flashes of his exceptional talent, showcasing the ability to create separation and make pivotal plays. He remains a notable option for teams seeking veteran talent. “There’s still a lot left in the tank,” said a former teammate. “He just needs to find the right situation.”
As the Jets pivot toward a new offensive strategy under head coach Aaron Glenn, they will likely seek to build around young talents already in-house, particularly wide receiver Garrett Wilson, while also considering potential quarterback options. Addressing the QB position is a priority, as the team looks to re-establish its competitiveness in the league.
In light of Adams’ situation, other teams have been eyeing him as a potential addition, including the Green Bay Packers, where Adams spent much of his career. Packers quarterback Jordan Love expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of reuniting with Adams. “Davante is an incredible player, and it’s clear we could use someone of his caliber,” Love said.
Additionally, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders are also on the lookout for experienced receivers. Both franchises have the cap space to bring onboard a player of Adams’ caliber, enhancing their offensive potentials for the upcoming season.
In the meantime, as the Jets navigate free agency and the impending NFL Draft, they are poised to make further moves to refine their roster. The next few weeks are crucial as the Jets evaluate their options, aiming to reclaim competitive stature in the 2025 season. With Adams and Rodgers likely to depart, fresh strategies may forge a new path for the franchise.
