Jets Win Preseason Opener Against Commanders

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the New York Jets kicked off their preseason with a thrilling come-from-behind victory, defeating the Washington Commanders 20-17 at MetLife Stadium.

Head Coach Robert Saleh decided to rest nearly 30 players, giving a chance for several young prospects to shine. Notable performances came from rookie running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, along with wide receiver Malachi Corley and cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers.

“Braelon didn’t disappoint,” Saleh said. “When he gets to the second level, he’s hard to stop. He is a heavy human and it was exciting to see him in the open field today.”

Allen made his presence felt in the second quarter, carrying the ball three times for a total of 45 yards. QB Andrew Peasley finished off a promising drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brownlee, tying the game at 7.

Commanders’ QB Jayden Daniels, the number 2 pick in the last draft, struck first with a 3-yard touchdown run. He had a solid performance, connecting with Dyami Brown for a 42-yard gain during a long, 11-play drive.

Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor, who will serve as the backup to Aaron Rodgers in the regular season, started for the Jets but only played two series before handing over the reins to Peasley.

In a dramatic fourth quarter, the Jets trailed 17-10 when rookie Israel Abanikanda scored on a 2-yard run, tying things up again. The victory was sealed as kicker Austin Seibert hit the game-winning field goal after a solid drive from rookie QB Adrian Martinez.

Martinez commented on building trust with his teammates, especially with wide receiver Brandon Smith, who made crucial plays to keep the Jets in the game.
