SALTA, Argentina — Colombian striker Jhon Durán has emerged as a key target for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr as the European winter transfer window nears its close. The 20-year-old Aston Villa forward, who has shown flashes of brilliance this season, is now at the center of transfer speculation following reports of Al Nassr’s interest.

Durán, who joined Aston Villa in 2023, has been a standout performer in the 2024-25 season, earning the trust of manager Unai Emery with crucial goals. However, a recent red card against Newcastle United has seen him relegated to the bench, with Ollie Watkins reclaiming the starting role. Despite this setback, Durán’s potential has not gone unnoticed, particularly by Al Nassr, who are seeking to replace Brazilian forward Talisca after his move to Fenerbahce.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Al Nassr has identified Durán as a serious option, alongside Bayer Leverkusen‘s Víctor Boniface. Romano revealed that Al Nassr’s delegation is already in Germany to negotiate for Boniface, but Durán remains a priority on their shortlist. “Aston Villa has no interest in letting Durán go,” Romano noted, adding that Emery views the Colombian as a long-term project for the club.

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender and current Sky Sports analyst, has sparked controversy with his take on Durán’s situation. Carragher suggested that Aston Villa should consider selling Durán to maximize his value, rather than parting ways with Watkins. “I would try to get another £10 million for him because he seems like a great player, but I don’t think the dynamic is going to work,” Carragher said. He argued that Durán’s presence is overshadowing Watkins, limiting the veteran striker’s performance.

Carragher’s comments have divided opinions, with many Aston Villa fans reluctant to see their young star depart. Durán’s recent goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League showcased his talent, earning praise from Carragher himself, who famously told the Colombian, “Te amo” (I love you) and called him his “favorite striker in Europe.”

As the transfer window deadline approaches on February 3, Durán’s future remains uncertain. While Aston Villa appears determined to retain him, the allure of a lucrative offer from Al Nassr could test the club’s resolve. For now, Durán continues to train with Aston Villa, hoping to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup and prove his worth on the pitch.
