Jimmy Butler Miami Heat 2025 Game Warm Up

MIAMI, Fla. — Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler has declined to sign a new contract and plans to use his $52 million player option for the 2025-26 season solely as a trade strategy, sources confirmed Wednesday. The decision comes as Butler’s seven-game suspension for “detrimental conduct” ends Thursday, forcing the Heat to decide whether to reintegrate him or pursue a trade.

Team officials, including owner Micky Arison, are set to meet with Butler to discuss his future with the franchise. The suspension, which began earlier this month, has left the Heat grappling with uncertainty as they navigate the midseason. Coach Erik Spoelstra and players have emphasized the need for clarity to minimize distractions caused by Butler’s situation.

The Heat currently sit seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 20-18 record, having secured three wins in their last five road games. Despite receiving trade offers for Butler, negotiations have stalled. Butler has expressed a preference to join teams like the Phoenix Suns or Golden State Warriors, according to ESPN. However, Heat President Pat Riley has publicly stated the team has no plans to trade the 35-year-old forward.

Butler, a six-time NBA All-Star, is averaging 17.6 points per game this season, his lowest scoring output since the 2013-14 season. His shot attempts have also declined, raising questions about his role in the team’s future. The Heat’s next move could significantly impact their playoff aspirations and long-term strategy.
