João Fonseca Looks for First Grass Win in Halle ATP 500

Halle, Germany – Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca is set to make his debut on grass this season at the ATP 500 tournament in Halle, starting on Tuesday at 8 a.m. (Brasília time). After a strong clay season, Fonseca now shifts his focus to grass in preparation for Wimbledon, which begins on June 30.
In his previous appearances on grass at top-level tournaments, Fonseca has struggled to secure wins. Last year, he lost in the first round in Halle to James Duckworth, who defeated him 6-4, 6-4. Unable to enter the main draw at Wimbledon due to his ranking, Fonseca fell in the first round of qualifiers to Alejandro Cañas with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10).
Grass is known for its fast pace, favoring strong servers and players adept at net play. It can be tricky, as the ball often behaves differently compared to clay or hard courts. Fonseca’s only victories on grass have been in lower-tier Challenger events, where he won against Kyle Edmund and Damir Dzumhur, but was ultimately eliminated in both tournaments.
Next week, Fonseca will compete at the ATP 250 in Eastbourne, followed by Wimbledon. In Halle, he will face Italian player Fabio Cobolli in his opening match. Fonseca secured a wildcard entry into the tournament, aiming to capitalize on his current ranking of 57, the best of his career.
Prominent names in the tournament include last year’s champion Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, who is the top seed and looking to win at home. Fonseca’s challenge is substantial but presents a valuable opportunity for growth as he seeks his first ATP-level win on grass.
Following his match against Cobolli, should he advance, Fonseca could face Ugo Humbert or Denis Shapovalov next. The prospect of meeting big names like Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and potentially Sinner later in the round is encouraging for the young Brazilian.
The ATP 500 at Halle has a rich history and attracts top talent, making it a key event leading into Wimbledon. As Fonseca prepares, he hopes to overcome his past results and establish his presence on the grass.
