Premiership forward Joe Daniher has announced his retirement from Australian rules football following Brisbane’s recent grand final triumph. The Brisbane Lions confirmed Daniher’s decision on Thursday, bringing an end to his notable career.

Reports of Daniher’s uncertain future began to circulate prior to the grand final, suggesting the possibility that the 2024 final would mark his retirement. His decision was cemented after the Lions secured a commanding victory over Sydney, securing Daniher’s first premiership at the top level at 30 years of age.

“I retire knowing I gave my absolute all to the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, and I am extremely proud of what I achieved individually and as a team,” Daniher said in a club statement. He extended his gratitude to both clubs and their fans, expressing privilege and appreciation for the support during his career.

Originally drafted by Essendon as a father-son selection with pick 10 in the 2012 draft, Daniher played 108 games for the Bombers. He joined Brisbane in 2021 after eight years with Essendon, during which he was named an All-Australian in 2017.

Throughout his career, Daniher played a total of 204 games, scoring 395 goals. He was a four-time leading goalkicker for Essendon and a two-time leading goalkicker for the Lions. His final contribution in the AFL was a goal in the fourth quarter of the grand final, sealing Brisbane’s 60-point win over Sydney.

Brisbane Lions’ football boss, Danny Daly, remarked on Daniher’s impact, describing him as a “generational player” and acknowledging his significant role in the team’s success. “We are extremely privileged that he played for the Brisbane Lions,” Daly added.

Daniher concluded his career with one year remaining on his contract, orchestrating his exit prior to the club’s best and fairest award ceremony held that evening. His decision reflects his consideration for personal and professional circumstances as the club looks to future seasons.
