Joe Echevarria, a seasoned executive with a storied history at the University of Miami, has been appointed as the institution’s president. The announcement follows Echevarria’s effective leadership as acting president and prior roles including CEO of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System. His appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees after a comprehensive consultation process with faculty members and key stakeholders.

Born and raised in the South Bronx, Echevarria has transitioned from humble beginnings to leading a major consulting and tax firm with approximately 70,000 employees. His journey began at the University of Miami 50 years ago, when he was a freshman in the Patti and Allan Herbert Business School. Echevarria’s affiliation with the University spans several decades, including his tenure as a trustee and his significant contributions as CEO of UHealth, where he implemented strategies to enhance patient care and satisfaction.

The Board’s decision was hailed as a ‘full circle moment’ for Echevarria, who regards the University as a powerful institution that turned unlikely possibilities into achievements, as he stated to the University community. Manny Kadre, chair of the Board of Trustees, praised Echevarria as a ‘true and proven leader,’ emphasizing his commitment to academic excellence.

Under Echevarria’s stewardship, UHealth saw strategic expansions that benefitted the South Florida community. His leadership was also marked by investments in science, improved faculty compensation, and the development of a new financial model for the University’s schools and colleges. Stuart Miller, chair of the University of Miami Health System Board of Directors, commended Echevarria’s professional excellence and dedication to the University’s mission.

Echevarria’s extensive career includes a 36-year tenure at Deloitte LLP, serving as chief executive officer and holding various leadership roles. He has also been active in the nonprofit and public sectors, including chairing the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance under former President Barack Obama.

The new president expressed enthusiasm about the University’s academic and athletic programs, emphasizing their importance to the U’s identity. His leadership aspirations include further infrastructure development and maintaining the University’s legacy as part of the Association of American Universities.

The appointment has been warmly received by faculty, student leaders, and alumni, noting Echevarria’s ability to inspire confidence and his dedication to transformative leadership. JoNel Newman, chair of the Faculty Senate, highlighted the robust consultative process preceding the appointment, suggesting strong endorsement from various University bodies.

Echevarria, who remains active in various corporate governance roles, continues to draw upon his personal and professional experiences to guide the University into the future, encouraging a sense of unity and shared achievement among the community.
