Joe Mixon’s Injury Leaves Texans Without Star Running Back
Houston, TX – The Houston Texans are facing a tough season as they continue to miss star running back Joe Mixon, who has been sidelined all year due to a non-football injury. The injury, which involves Mixon’s ankle, was sustained during offseason training and remains unclear.
Mixon was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list on August 26, and with the Texans currently sitting at 3-5, there is no indication of his return. Texans general manager Nick Caserio commented on the situation, stating, “We will take it one day at a time,” but there is no timeline for Mixon’s recovery.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans has spoken about Mixon in past tense, expressing that the team misses his contributions. “We’re rolling with the guys that are here,” Ryans added, implying a shift in focus to other players on the roster.
Mixon had an exceptional debut season with the Texans in 2024, accumulating over 1,300 total yards and 12 touchdowns. However, his ongoing absence has left the team relying on Nick Chubb and rookie Woody Marks, who have struggled with consistency in the rushing game.
The Texans’ rushing statistics show they rank 26th in the NFL with a low impact score of 68.4. As a result, their rushing attempts per game are limited, and they have only managed three rushing touchdowns this season, placing them 29th in the league in that category.
Caserio indicated that the team’s backfield situation is less than desirable, with Chubb and Marks both ranked toward the bottom among running backs. While Marks has showcased potential in the pass game, Chubb has seen limited success overall.
The Texans are now facing the challenge of regaining their playoff position without a clear answer for Mixon’s return. The uncertainty surrounding his injury continues to cast a shadow over the team’s offensive strategies as they navigate the second half of the season.
