Joey Bosa Joins Buffalo Bills on One-Year Deal

Buffalo, NY — The Buffalo Bills have signed defensive end Joey Bosa to a one-year, $12.6 million contract, the team announced late Tuesday night. The move comes after Bosa was released by the Los Angeles Chargers last week, freeing up considerable salary cap space for the franchise.
Bosa, a five-time Pro Bowler, has faced challenges with injuries in recent seasons. Nonetheless, he remains a significant asset, evidenced by his selection as an alternate for the Pro Bowl in 2024. He is expected to become a key player on the Bills’ defensive line, pairing with Greg Rousseau and filling the void left by Von Miller‘s recent release.
The Bills’ general manager Brandon Beane has focused on shoring up the defensive line, which struggled to apply pressure in the previous season. This signing mirrors the signing of Miller in 2022, as Bosa brings a wealth of experience and production to the team. The Bills recorded 39 sacks in 2024, down from 54 in 2023, highlighting the need for improvements in their pass rush.
“We believe in building from the lines,” Beane stated, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the defensive unit. With Bosa joining the roster, the Bills aim to enhance their ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks after struggling in their AFC Championship Game loss last season.
Bosa’s performance has fluctuated due to injuries in the past few seasons. He has missed a total of 23 games over the last three years, but when healthy, he has proven to be a dominant force. Over his career, Bosa has accrued 343 tackles, 72 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles.
In recent years, Bosa’s production has seen a decline; he registered only five sacks in 2024 while playing just 50% of the defensive snaps. Despite this, his previous accolades and ability to pressure quarterbacks make him a valuable pickup for Buffalo as they prepare for the 2025 season.
As part of their ongoing roster improvements, the Bills also re-signed running back Ty Johnson and secured fullback Reggie Gilliam to one-year and two-year deals, respectively. These moves reflect the team’s commitment to building a well-rounded lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
In addition to Bosa, the Bills are exploring other potential roster enhancements after freeing up cap space. By investing in Bosa at this relatively low cost, Buffalo is taking a calculated risk to bolster their defense.
Bosa, whose brother Nick plays for the San Francisco 49ers, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to compete in the AFC. “I’m excited to come to Buffalo and be part of a team that has championship aspirations,” Bosa said in a statement.
With Bosa’s addition, the Bills hope to significantly improve their pass rush and ultimately become a formidable contender in the upcoming NFL season.
