ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have finalized a one-year, $12.6 million contract with five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Joey Bosa, following his recent release from the Los Angeles Chargers, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

Bosa, who turns 30 in July, was a dominant presence on the Chargers’ defense since being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, earning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after a season that included 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss.

Despite his storied career, injuries have hampered Bosa’s performance in recent seasons. Over the last three years, he only participated in 28 games, prompting the Chargers to part ways with him last Wednesday, marking the end of his nine-year stint with the franchise.

In 2024, Bosa played in 14 games, recording 5.0 sacks and 22 tackles, and was named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time, although as an alternate. His performance included six pressures and one sack in the Chargers’ playoff loss in January.

“It’s a fresh start for me with the Bills,” Bosa said during his introductory press conference. “I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to a team with championship aspirations.”

The Bills were eager to bolster their defense, and Bosa’s signing comes as a replacement for veteran linebacker Von Miller, who is recovering from injury. With Bosa now on their roster, the Bills look to enhance their pass-rushing capabilities.

Bosa’s career stats are impressive, totaling 343 tackles, 157 quarterback hits, 87 tackles for loss, 17 forced fumbles, and 72 sacks, making him the second-leading sack artist in Chargers’ history, trailing only Leslie O'Neal.

His new contract with the Bills includes $12 million guaranteed, with the potential to earn up to $15.6 million through performance incentives. The 49ers and Dolphins were also in contention for Bosa’s services before he ultimately decided on Buffalo.

“Joey is an elite player when healthy and brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our defense,” said Bills head coach Sean McDermott. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to Buffalo.”
