Jonny Evans Bids Farewell After Final Match with Manchester United

HONG KONG, China — Jonny Evans played his final match for Manchester United on Friday, May 30, during a friendly against Hong Kong. The veteran defender started the game at center-back and played for 45 minutes before being substituted at halftime. His exit marked the end of a distinguished career with the club.
The match concluded with United securing a 3-1 victory. Ayden Heaven replaced Evans and scored the final goal of the game. Although the first half was relatively uneventful for Evans and the defense, Hong Kong managed to score with a shot from Juninho that slipped past goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
In the second half, Chido Obi showcased his talent, scoring two goals that helped United regain the lead. This friendly served as a bittersweet farewell for Evans, whose departure was announced just days earlier.
Evans, 37, has a rich history with Manchester United, joining the club’s youth academy as a child. He debuted for the first team in 2007 under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Over two stints with the club, he accumulated a total of 241 appearances and was part of a team that won multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
Despite facing challenges, including injuries during the latter part of his career, Evans continued to be a key figure in the locker room, mentoring younger players. His contributions did not go unnoticed, as manager Ruben Amorim praised Evans’ standards in training despite physical struggles.
“You can see the standards in his prime, and you understand why he won so many titles,” Amorim noted. Evans’ long career also included loan spells at Royal Antwerp and Sunderland, followed by notable positions at West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City before his return to United.
As Evans prepared to leave the field for the last time, he received a warm farewell from fans. His wife, Helen, shared a heartfelt message on social media, reflecting on their journey together and their three children. Evans has left an indelible mark on Manchester United, and his contributions will be remembered by fans for years to come.
