Jonquel Jones Wnba Championship Celebration

New York, NY – The New York Liberty secured their first WNBA championship in 2024, led by the versatile Jonquel Jones. After a strong season and a tough Finals loss in 2023, the Liberty were determined to reclaim their standing.

The 31-year-old Jones emerged as a stabilizing force for the team, which included stars Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot. Coach Sandy Brondello emphasized Jones’ leadership qualities, stating, “When she speaks, everybody listens.” Despite not being the loudest player on the court, Jones made her impact felt through her performance.

In the decisive Game 5 of the 2023 Finals, when the Liberty faced early adversity against the Minnesota Lynx, Jones helped turn the tide. She scored the team’s first basket and contributed significantly, sealing a 67–62 overtime victory with 17 points and six rebounds. Her ability to perform under pressure has made Jones a critical asset.

During the 2024 regular season, the Liberty went 11–0 when Jones achieved a double-double. She averaged an impressive 63.2% shooting in high-pressure situations, further proving her clutch performance capabilities. Jones expressed her team-first mentality, stating, “Playing on a team with other stars is as much sacrifice as it is stardom. It simply wouldn’t work if all of us expected the ball in our hands at all times.”

The Liberty faced a setback in the 2024 Finals Game 1, losing to the Lynx despite Jones scoring 24 points. This didn’t deter her; instead, she emphasized the importance of accountability and hard work. “The small things done consistently lead to big things,” Jones said post-game.

Following the Game 1 loss, the Liberty came back stronger, winning Game 2 with Jones leading the way. Her insights during team meetings, where honesty is prioritized, have earned her respect and bolstered team culture. “It’s easier to have a team like that when everyone takes accountability…,” she noted.

Brondello highlighted Jones’ unique skills and praised her personality, saying, “Ohhh, I love her. I think everyone loves JJ.” This sentiment was echoed by teammates who appreciate her contributions both on and off the court.

At the franchise’s October ticker-tape parade, Jones embraced her role as a celebrated leader, holding her Finals MVP trophy high above her head, symbolizing the end of a 28-year championship drought. As she stood before a cheering crowd, she reflected on the team’s journey, underlining the collective effort that led to their success.

“Last year we were one of the best teams in the league but hadn’t proven that we could win on the biggest stage,” Jones said. This time, the Liberty were ready to be the hunted in the league.
