Joseph Rosales Suspended for Three Games Over Discrimination Allegations

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota United FC midfielder Joseph Rosales has been suspended for three games by Major League Soccer (MLS) after being found in violation of the league’s Joint Non-Discrimination Policy during a match against the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 27.
The suspension stems from an incident involving Rosales and Whitecaps forward Emmanuel Sabbi. Following the match, an independent investigation concluded that Rosales used discriminatory language directed at Sabbi.
Rosales, 24, denied the accusations but has chosen not to contest the suspension. “I want to be clear: I did not use any discriminatory language,” he stated. “However, I acknowledge that my actions contributed to escalating tensions on the field, and for that, I sincerely apologize to the opposing player and to everyone affected.”
Reacting to the league’s decision, Rosales expressed respect for their process and emphasized his commitment to supporting a respectful atmosphere in soccer. Minnesota United also showed their support for Rosales, stating that they believe in his integrity, despite the findings of the investigation.
The league confirmed that Rosales will miss three upcoming matches: against the Houston Dynamo on May 14, the St. Louis City SC on May 17, and a U.S. Open Cup match against St. Louis on May 21. Reinstatement after the suspension will depend on his completion of a restorative practices program.
This incident marks the second charge of discrimination against a Minnesota United player in recent years, following a similar episode involving Franco Fragapane in 2021.
