Josh Dix Weighs Transfer Options After Stellar Season at Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — As the transfer portal opens, Josh Dix, a standout guard from the University of Iowa, is exploring options to take his talents elsewhere following a successful junior season.
Dix averaged 14.4 points per game during the 2024-25 season, also contributing 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest. His sharpshooting ability is highlighted by his 42.2 percent success rate from three-point range, making him one of the most coveted players in the transfer market.
After Iowa concluded their campaign earlier this month, Dix entered the transfer portal amid significant coaching changes, including the departure of head coach Fran McCaffery. New Iowa head coach Ben McCollum, who previously coached at Drake, is reportedly interested in retaining Dix, who was recruited by him during high school.
“It’s a huge transition for me, but I’ve built a lot of relationships here too,” Dix said about his current situation. “I will be weighing all my options before making a decision.”
At Iowa, Dix established himself as a key player, starting all 32 games in the recent season. He scored in double figures in 27 of those games, with a peak performance of 31 points against Nebraska in January. His consistent scoring and substantial improvement—he developed into a reliable offensive contributor over his three years in Iowa City—speak to his potential future stardom.
As his recruitment process kicks off, Dix has already visited Kansas and Illinois and is expected to tour Creighton and Indiana soon. His shooting prowess has caught the attention of scouts and coaches alike, making him a focal point for several programs looking to boost their rosters.
Dix’s former teammate, Owen Freeman, has also entered the transfer portal after a notable freshman season, highlighting the shifting dynamics within Iowa’s basketball program. Freeman averaged 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds, indicating that he too will seek new opportunities.
With all four Division I men’s basketball programs in Iowa winding down their seasons, transfer activity is expected to surge in the coming weeks, as each team seeks to rebuild and improve ahead of the next campaign.
According to various reports, McCollum is expected to implement a new strategy at Iowa, which could involve active recruitment of talent from both high school and the transfer portal—positioning both Dix and Freeman as prime candidates for a fresh start elsewhere.
As the transfer window remains open, fans and analysts alike will be closely monitoring Dix’s next steps, given his significant impact at Iowa and the high expectations surrounding his aptitude on the court.
