Josh Hart has suggested that a move back to the second unit might help him rediscover his versatile role, following a period in which he started four of the New York Knicks‘ five preseason games. Despite Hart’s suggestion, there has been no indication from head coach Tom Thibodeau that such a change is being considered.

The Knicks’ starting lineup has been overhauled, featuring new additions Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, alongside returning players Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby. Based on this setup, the Knicks have a couple of options should they choose to replace Hart in the starting five. These include guard Deuce McBride and power forward Precious Achiuwa, both of whom performed well when given starting roles last season.

Achiuwa averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in 36.6 minutes over 18 starts during his previous season with the Knicks. His presence could bolster the team’s rim protection following Isaiah Hartenstein‘s departure and Mitchell Robinson‘s injury. However, Achiuwa left Friday’s game against Washington with a hamstring issue and did not return, which may influence lineup decisions.

Alternatively, Jericho Sims could be considered as a replacement in a larger lineup configuration. McBride, who averaged 17.9 points and 4.1 assists, also proved to be effective in his 14 starts last season. Starting McBride could relieve some defensive pressure from point guard Brunson, allowing Anunoby to manage the forward spots.

As the regular season approaches with its opening game against the Boston Celtics, Hart’s role remains crucial. During the preseason, Hart expressed uncertainty about his role, saying, “I’m lost. I have no idea.” Despite preseason struggles, including minimal shot attempts, Hart remains a key player for the Knicks as they aim to compete at a higher level this season.

Hart has emphasized the importance of adapting and sacrificing individual performance for team success, particularly after the arrivals of Bridges and Towns, both of whom are still adjusting to their new environment. Towns and Bridges had difficulty with their shooting during the preseason, missing the majority of their attempts from beyond the arc.

As the Knicks prepare for the season opener, Hart stressed the need for finding their rhythm, stating, “It’s not about me, and I’m cool with that. I think we just all need to figure out a way we all can be our best selves in whatever role or minutes that is.”
