Josh Lowe Returns, Travis Jankowski Heads to Injured List

TORONTO, Canada — Outfielder Josh Lowe has returned to the Tampa Bay Rays after recovering from a right oblique strain. The Rays activated him from the 10-day injured list on Thursday. In a corresponding move, teammate Travis Jankowski has been placed on the same list due to a left groin strain.
Lowe, 27, had been sidelined since the season opener on March 28, where he went 1-for-2. His return comes at a crucial time for the Rays, who are struggling with offense. Lowe is expected to bat leadoff and serve as the designated hitter in Thursday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
During spring training, Lowe showcased his potential by hitting .429 with two home runs, two doubles, and seven RBIs. Given the injuries plaguing the Rays’ outfield—including fellow outfielders Jonny DeLuca and Jake Mangum, who are also on the injured list—his timely return could provide a much-needed boost.
Jankowski, on the other hand, exited the game with soreness after going 0-for-3 in a 3-1 loss to Toronto on Wednesday. He has had a lackluster season thus far, batting .258 with two RBIs over 14 games since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox on April 25.
Throughout his 11-year career, Jankowski has posted a .236 batting average with 11 home runs and 98 RBIs. With Lowe’s return, his future on the team may be uncertain once he heals.
The Rays drafted Lowe 13th overall in 2016, and he has made a significant impact with a .262 career batting average, hitting 32 home runs and collecting 130 RBIs in 296 games.
