Journalism Leads 2025 Kentucky Derby Field as Favorites Emerge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby kicks off today at Churchill Downs with 19 horses vying for victory in the annual Run for the Roses. Journalism is the morning-line favorite, holding 3-1 odds as determined by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.
Today’s race is set to begin at approximately 6:57 p.m. EDT. Betting will continue to influence the odds as the race approaches. Most of the Derby horses earned their spots through a points system established in several qualifying races across the U.S. that began last September.
Trainer Michael McCarthy, who oversees Journalism, expressed hope that the race could provide a brief moment of joy for residents of Altadena, California, who have faced significant challenges due to recent wildfires. “It’s been a few months now, and maybe for a couple of hours on Saturday, we can provide them a little bit of entertainment,” he stated.
Sovereignty and Sandman are considered the closest challengers, holding morning-line odds of 5-1 and 6-1, respectively. Sovereignty secured his spot after a strong performance in the Florida Derby, while Sandman emerged victorious in the Arkansas Derby.
Last year’s Kentucky Derby was remarkably dramatic, ending with a photo finish where Mystik Dan captured victory. This year, all eyes will be on the contenders and whether they can replicate such a thrilling conclusion.
The 2025 Kentucky Derby features several other notable contenders, including Burnham Square and Rodriguez, both receiving 12-1 odds. However, Rodriguez has been scratched from the race due to a minor injury, allowing Baeza to take his place in the lineup.
Bob Baffert, a prominent trainer returning to the Derby after a three-year suspension, has entered Citizen Bull, who holds 20-1 odds. Despite recent setbacks, Baffert’s history of success in the Derby has many betting on Citizen Bull to perform well.
As the day unfolds, forecasters predict perfect weather for Derby Day, adding to the excitement of one of horse racing’s premier events. Viewers can watch the race on NBC-TV or stream it on Peacock, with coverage starting at noon.
The anticipation is building as fans from all over gather to see which horse will claim the coveted garland of roses.
