Juan Soto Launches First Home Run as a Mets Player

HOUSTON — Juan Soto wasted no time making an impact with the New York Mets, launching his first home run in the team’s second game of the season against the Houston Astros on Friday night.
The star right fielder connected on a solo shot in the third inning, marking his sixth plate appearance of the season. “It’s always great to have the first one,” Soto said after his home run, which traveled 390 feet at 107.3 mph.
“A lot of guys want to get the first one out of the way early and try to get that pressure off. So I feel like it feels pretty good,” he added, downplaying any pre-game jitters.
Facing Astros pitcher Hunter Brown, Soto hit a 96 mph cutter that was located just outside the strike zone. Unlike most players, Soto capitalized on the opportunity, driving the ball over the right-field wall with precision.
“Pretty incredible,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, emphasizing the challenge of hitting a pitch placed up and in, especially at such high velocity. “Not easy to do. We’re talking about a pitch that’s out of the strike zone. He’s able to hit it on a line like that. Amazing.”
Soto, who finished the game going 1-for-3 with a walk, reflected on his experience. Having struck out in his previous two at-bats during the Mets’ season-opening loss, Soto was determined to get on the board early in the season. “I was looking for a pitch in that area,” he stated, attributing his successful hit to game analysis and prior knowledge of Brown’s pitching tendencies.
The home run marks a new chapter for Soto, who signed a massive 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets this offseason. After a stellar season with the San Diego Padres in 2024, Soto expressed his eagerness to contribute to his new team.
“I just bring myself. This is who I am. I hope you guys like it,” Soto said during the spring training, emphasizing his intent to maintain personal authenticity as he adjusts to his new role with the Mets.
As the highest-paid player in professional sports history, Soto recognizes the expectations placed upon him. However, he remains focused on his main goals: winning multiple championships and making a significant impact in MLB history.
